Myth-Busting: Can the flu shot give you the flu?

I got my flu shot today. Should I be worried that the flu shot might give me the flu or make me feel sick?

Nope. For a refresher on why the flu shot is not going to make you sick (in case you somehow have not read Don’t Swallow Your Gum or Don’t Cross Your Eyes), you can revisit our debunking of this myth for Prevention magazine or Forbes. The super-short version: the flu vaccine contains a dead or permanently inactivated virus. It will not be resurrected to infect you. In lots and lots of studies, no one has ever gotten the flu from a flu shot.

Getting the flu is like being hit by a truck. Miserable. Even worse, it can kill you. Avoiding a chill or making sure you dry your hair before going out in the cold will NOT help you. And there are NO cures for the common cold or for influenza.

You should embrace your chance at real prevention: GET A FLU SHOT!
